Car Battery Jump Start
A jump start gets the engine running — it does not fix the battery. We use a protected booster rather than another car, then test the battery so you know whether you are good to go or living on borrowed time.
Jump start or replacement?
- Battery under 2 years, drained by a light
- Jump, drive, retest later
- Battery 3+ years, slow starts recently
- Test — replacement likely
- Swollen, cracked or leaking
- Do not jump — replace
- Repeated flats with healthy test
- Investigate parasitic drain or charging fault
This page answers
Can my car be jump started safely, and is a jump start enough or do I need a new battery?
Signs worth testing
Lights left on
A healthy battery drained by an interior light or headlights usually recovers after a jump and a good drive.
Car unused for weeks
Long periods without driving discharge any battery. A jump may work, but a test afterwards is important.
Uncertain cause
A jump start confirms whether the starting problem is electrical, which helps decide the next step.
What we measure
- 1
Check before connecting
A cracked, swollen or leaking battery should not be jump started. We look first.
- 2
Protected booster
A booster pack with reverse-polarity and surge protection, connected to the manufacturer's jump points where provided.
- 3
Start and stabilise
Once running, the booster is disconnected in the correct order.
- 4
Test the battery
State-of-health and charging output are checked, and you are told honestly whether the battery is likely to start the car again.
What a test can and can’t tell you
Use the jump points
Many modern cars — especially with boot or under-seat batteries — have dedicated jump terminals under the bonnet. Connecting directly elsewhere can be wrong.
Hybrids and EVs
Some hybrids and EVs must never be used to jump another car, and have specific procedures to be jumped themselves. We follow the manufacturer's method.
A jump is not a charge
A short drive will not fully recharge a deeply flat battery. Smart charging systems may take several long drives, or a proper charge.
Vehicles we support
Petrol and diesel vehicles, plus hybrids and EVs where the manufacturer documents a 12V jump procedure.
Questions about car battery jump start
Can a jump start damage my car?
Done incorrectly, yes — voltage spikes and reversed leads can damage electronics. A protected booster and correct connection points reduce that risk considerably.
How long should I drive after a jump start?
There is no single answer, but a short trip is rarely enough. Have the battery tested and charged properly if it was deeply discharged.
Can you jump start a hybrid?
Many hybrids have a 12V battery that can be boosted using the manufacturer's procedure. We confirm the method for your vehicle.
