The battery guide.
How car batteries work, why they differ, and what a correct replacement involves — written to help you make sense of what your car needs.
Technology
- AGM batteries explainedAn AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery holds its electrolyte in fibreglass mats instead of free liquid. It handles deep, repeated cycling and high electrical loads better than a conventional battery, which is why many start-stop and premium vehicles require one. If your car came with AGM, it should be replaced with AGM.
- EFB batteries explainedAn EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) is a strengthened conventional battery built to survive the extra cycling of entry-level start-stop systems. It is more durable than a standard flooded battery but less capable than AGM. EFB can usually replace a conventional battery, but it should not replace an AGM battery.
- Conventional (flooded) car batteriesA conventional (flooded) car battery is the traditional lead-acid starter battery with liquid electrolyte. It is reliable and economical for vehicles without start-stop, but heat speeds up corrosion and water loss, so in the UAE it typically lasts less time than in cooler climates.
