Short answer
In the UAE, many car batteries last roughly two to four years — shorter than in cooler climates, mainly because heat accelerates internal wear. Driving pattern, battery type and how long the car stands unused also matter. A battery test is a more reliable guide than age alone.
Why batteries wear out faster here
Heat speeds up the chemical reactions inside a battery — including the corrosion that slowly destroys it. Under-bonnet temperatures in a Dubai summer are far above the outside air temperature, especially in stop-start traffic.
Batteries often fail in the cooler months or on a mild morning, but the damage was done in the summer.
Habits that shorten battery life
- Short trips that never fully recharge the battery.
- Long periods unused — common when residents travel for summer.
- Accessories running with the engine off (dashcams in parking mode, fridges, lighting).
- Loose hold-downs, which allow vibration damage.
Habits that help
- Test the battery before summer and before long trips.
- Drive for a longer stretch regularly, or use a suitable maintainer if the car will stand for weeks.
- Keep terminals clean and the battery secure.
- Replace with the correct technology for the vehicle.
When to replace
Replace when a test shows the battery can no longer reliably start the car — not just because of a date. Signs include slow cranking, start-stop no longer activating, repeated flats or a swollen case. Our testing service explains what the readings mean.
