Car Battery Testing
A test answers one question honestly: is the battery the problem? We check the battery itself, how it behaves while starting, and whether the vehicle is charging it correctly.
Reading the numbers (12V lead-acid, engine off, rested)
- ≈12.6V and above
- Fully charged
- ≈12.4V
- Partly discharged — recharge advisable
- ≈12.2V and below
- Significantly discharged — charge and retest
- Running ≈13.8–14.8V
- Typical charging range; some smart systems vary more
Guide values only. Temperature, battery type and recent driving all affect readings, and smart-charging vehicles deliberately vary alternator output.
This page answers
How is a car battery tested, what do the results mean, and what can a test not tell me?
Signs worth testing
Slow or hesitant starting
The engine turns over more slowly than usual, especially after the car has stood overnight.
Start-stop has stopped working
Many vehicles disable start-stop when battery charge or health is low — an early hint worth checking.
Electrical oddities
Dim lights at idle, infotainment resets, or warnings that appear and clear on their own.
Peace of mind before summer
A quick test before peak heat or a long trip.
What we measure
- 1
Resting voltage
Measured with the engine off. A low reading suggests discharge, but a surface charge can make a weak battery look healthy.
- 2
Conductance / state-of-health
An electronic tester estimates the battery's remaining starting capability compared with its rating.
- 3
Cranking test
Voltage is watched while the engine starts. A deep dip points to a battery struggling under load.
- 4
Charging-system check
With the engine running, alternator output is checked at idle and with electrical loads on.
- 5
Result and recommendation
Healthy, recharge and retest, replace, or investigate further — with the readings explained.
What a test can and can’t tell you
A discharged battery is not always a failed one
A battery drained by a light left on may recover after a proper charge. Testing a deeply discharged battery can give misleading results, so a retest may be needed.
Parasitic drain
If a healthy battery keeps going flat, something may be drawing current with the car off. Finding the source can take longer than a standard test.
Tests have limits
A conductance test is an estimate, not a guarantee. Intermittent faults — such as a failing starter — may not appear during a short test.
Vehicles we support
All 12V lead-acid systems, including start-stop and AGM vehicles. Low-voltage lithium systems in some EVs need manufacturer-specific diagnostics.
Questions about car battery testing
Can a battery test tell me exactly how long my battery will last?
No. It estimates current health. Heat, usage and charging all influence how quickly it declines from here.
My battery tested fine but the car still will not start. Why?
The cause may be a starter motor, corroded cable, poor earth, immobiliser or fuel issue. We will tell you what the readings point to and what they rule out.
Do you test the alternator too?
We check charging-system output at the battery. A detailed alternator diagnosis, if needed, is a workshop task.
