Volvo XC90 battery

The second-generation XC90 uses AGM batteries and, on some versions, a support battery for start-stop.

Which XC90 do you have?

Pick the model year to see its generation. It narrows things down — it doesn’t settle the exact battery on its own.

Choose a year to see which generation it belongs to and what that means for the battery.

Important battery considerations

  • Test both main and support batteries.
  • Reset battery monitoring after replacement.

Symptoms & diagnostics

Slow or laboured cranking
Most noticeable after the car has stood overnight or for several days.
Start-stop stops engaging
Many XC90 variants with start-stop disable it when battery health is low.
Electrical warnings or resets
Dashboard messages, infotainment restarts or comfort features switching off.
Auxiliary battery messages
On versions with a secondary battery, warnings may refer to that battery rather than the main one.
Needing repeated jump starts
A sign the battery can no longer hold or deliver enough charge — or of a drain or charging fault.

These symptoms can also come from charging faults, parasitic drain, cables or the starter. A battery and charging test tells them apart.

Replacing the battery on a Volvo XC90

  1. 01

    Confirm the battery

Generation, engine and the fitted battery label are checked against the replacement.

  2. 02

    Protect settings

A memory saver is connected where practical.

  3. 03

    Access the battery

Covers and heat shields are removed and kept for refitting.

  4. 04

    Swap and secure

Negative first off, last on. Terminals cleaned, hold-down tightened, vent tube refitted where present.

  5. 05

    Register / reset

Resetting the battery monitoring after replacement is recommended.

  6. 06

    Check charging

Starting and charging voltages are verified before we leave.

AGM

A vehicle designed for AGM should be fitted with AGM. A flooded or EFB battery in its place is likely to wear out quickly and may trigger charging-system faults.
