Battery technology across the Volvo range

Some models have a secondary battery that supports start-stop.

AGM

Electrolyte is held in glass-fibre mats between the plates. AGM batteries tolerate frequent deep cycling and high electrical loads, which is why they are fitted to many premium and start-stop vehicles with brake-energy recovery.

Replacement rule: A vehicle designed for AGM should be fitted with AGM. A flooded or EFB battery in its place is likely to wear out quickly and may trigger charging-system faults.

What to know before replacing a Volvo battery

Auxiliary battery warnings

Messages about the support battery may refer to the auxiliary unit, not the main battery.

How we match a Volvo battery

  1. 1Identify the model, generation and engine — your VIN or a photo helps.
  2. 2Read the fitted battery’s label: technology, size, terminals, ratings.
  3. 3Check it against the vehicle specification — previous replacements aren’t always correct.
  4. 4Resetting the battery monitoring after replacement is recommended.

Volvo battery questions

My XC90 has a "support battery" message. What is it?

Some Volvo models have a secondary battery. The message may not involve the main battery at all — both should be tested.
