Is it safe to jump start a modern car?
Modern cars can usually be jump started — if it is done correctly. Jump points, booster packs, hybrids and the mistakes that damage electronics.
The short answer
Most modern cars can be jump started safely using the manufacturer's jump points and a protected booster or a suitable donor vehicle, following the owner's manual. Risks come from reversed connections, voltage spikes, damaged batteries and using hybrids or EVs as donors when the manufacturer does not allow it.
Before you connect anything
- Look at the battery. Do not jump a battery that is swollen, cracked or leaking.
- Read the owner’s manual. It shows the jump points and any special steps.
- Switch everything off in both vehicles — lights, air-conditioning, infotainment.
Use the jump points
Many cars with batteries in the boot or under a seat have dedicated jump terminals under the bonnet. Use them rather than trying to reach the battery.
Booster packs vs donor cars
A good booster pack with reverse-polarity and surge protection reduces the risk of damaging electronics. A donor car works too, but connection order and engine speed matter, and both vehicles’ electrics are exposed.
Hybrids and EVs
Many hybrids have a 12V battery that can be boosted to “wake” the hybrid system. However, some manufacturers advise against using a hybrid or EV to jump another vehicle. Always follow the manual.
After the jump
A jump start is not a charge. A short drive rarely restores a deeply flat battery, and if the battery is old it may fail again tomorrow. Have it tested — our jump start service includes a test afterwards so you know where you stand.
