Kia Sportage battery

A compact SUV with conventional or EFB batteries depending on equipment.

Which Sportage do you have?

Pick the model year to see its generation. It narrows things down — it doesn’t settle the exact battery on its own.

Ask about my Sportage

Choose a year to see which generation it belongs to and what that means for the battery.

We don’t publish battery specifications we haven’t verified. Different engines and equipment can require different batteries, so the exact match is confirmed against your vehicle and the battery currently fitted.

Important battery considerations

  • ISG versions keep EFB/AGM.
  • Registration is not typically required.

Symptoms & diagnostics

Slow or laboured cranking
Most noticeable after the car has stood overnight or for several days.
Start-stop stops engaging
Many Sportage variants with start-stop disable it when battery health is low.
Electrical warnings or resets
Dashboard messages, infotainment restarts or comfort features switching off.
Needing repeated jump starts
A sign the battery can no longer hold or deliver enough charge — or of a drain or charging fault.

These symptoms can also come from charging faults, parasitic drain, cables or the starter. A battery and charging test tells them apart.

Replacing the battery on a Kia Sportage

  1. 01

    Confirm the battery

Generation, engine and the fitted battery label are checked against the replacement.

  2. 02

    Protect settings

A memory saver is connected where practical.

  3. 03

    Access the battery

Covers and heat shields are removed and kept for refitting.

  4. 04

    Swap and secure

Negative first off, last on. Terminals cleaned, hold-down tightened, vent tube refitted where present.

  5. 05

    Reset convenience functions

Window auto-up or similar functions are re-initialised if needed.

  6. 06

    Check charging

Starting and charging voltages are verified before we leave.

Battery options for the Sportage

Technologies recorded for this model’s generations. The right one for your car depends on its exact specification.

Flooded lead-acid (SLI)

Conventional

Not suitable where the manufacturer specifies EFB or AGM. Upgrading a conventional application to EFB or AGM is often possible but should be confirmed for the specific vehicle.

About Conventional →

Enhanced Flooded Battery

EFB

EFB can often replace a conventional battery, and AGM can often replace EFB — but EFB should not replace AGM. The vehicle may also need to be told which type is fitted.
