BMW 3 Series battery

BMW’s core sedan carries its battery in the boot on recent generations, with AGM common on start-stop versions.

Which 3 Series do you have?

Pick the model year to see its generation. It narrows things down — it doesn’t settle the exact battery on its own.

Ask about my 3 Series

Choose a year to see which generation it belongs to and what that means for the battery.

We don’t publish battery specifications we haven’t verified. Different engines and equipment can require different batteries, so the exact match is confirmed against your vehicle and the battery currently fitted.

Important battery considerations

  • Registration after every replacement; coding if specification changes.
  • Refit the vent tube and the boot floor panels carefully.
  • BMW vehicles with intelligent battery sensors should have a new battery registered. If the battery type or capacity changes, it must also be coded.

Symptoms & diagnostics

Slow or laboured cranking
Most noticeable after the car has stood overnight or for several days.
Start-stop stops engaging
Many 3 Series variants with start-stop disable it when battery health is low.
Electrical warnings or resets
Dashboard messages, infotainment restarts or comfort features switching off.
Needing repeated jump starts
A sign the battery can no longer hold or deliver enough charge — or of a drain or charging fault.

These symptoms can also come from charging faults, parasitic drain, cables or the starter. A battery and charging test tells them apart.

Replacing the battery on a BMW 3 Series

  1. 01

    Confirm the battery

Generation, engine and the fitted battery label are checked against the replacement.

  2. 02

    Protect settings

A memory saver is connected where practical.

  3. 03

    Access: boot, right side

Trim or floor panels are removed carefully; jump points under the bonnet are not the battery itself.

  4. 04

    Swap and secure

Negative first off, last on. Terminals cleaned, hold-down tightened, vent tube refitted where present.

  5. 05

    Register / reset

BMW vehicles with intelligent battery sensors should have a new battery registered. If the battery type or capacity changes, it must also be coded.

  6. 06

    Check charging

Starting and charging voltages are verified before we leave.

Battery options for the 3 Series

Technologies recorded for this model’s generations. The right one for your car depends on its exact specification.

Absorbent Glass Mat

AGM

A vehicle designed for AGM should be fitted with AGM. A flooded or EFB battery in its place is likely to wear out quickly and may trigger charging-system faults.

About AGM →

Flooded lead-acid (SLI)

Conventional

Not suitable where the manufacturer specifies EFB or AGM. Upgrading a conventional application to EFB or AGM is often possible but should be confirmed for the specific vehicle.

About Conventional →

Enhanced Flooded Battery

EFB

EFB can often replace a conventional battery, and AGM can often replace EFB — but EFB should not replace AGM. The vehicle may also need to be told which type is fitted.

BMW 3 Series battery FAQs

Which battery does my BMW 3 Series need?

It depends on the generation, engine and equipment. Use the year selector above to narrow down the generation, then send us your vehicle details and a photo of the current battery label — we confirm the exact match before fitting.

Can I fit an EFB battery to my G20?

If the vehicle specifies AGM, it should stay AGM.
